My story

❤️ In Memory of My Mam ❤️

This October, I’m taking part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s Run 31 Miles in October fundraiser in memory of my mam.

In 2022, my mam was diagnosed with cancer and faced what followed with incredible strength, bravery and courage. She battled through treatment with a determination that inspired everyone who knew her. Even during the most difficult times, she showed a strength that I will never forget.

Sadly, my mam passed away in 2025. Although she is no longer with us, the strength, courage and inspiration she showed throughout her battle remain with me, and with everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

During her treatment and afterwards, my mam used many of the services provided by Macmillan Cancer Support. The help, information, guidance and support they provided meant so much to her and to our family during an incredibly difficult period.

Taking on this challenge is my small way of remembering my mam, honouring her incredible strength, and giving something back to an organisation that was there for her when she needed it.

So, throughout October, I’ll be running 31 miles in her memory.

On paper, running a mile a day for 31 days might not sound like a particularly huge challenge to some people, especially at this time of year when we’re surrounded by people taking on the Great North Run and much bigger running challenges.

For me, though, this is going to be quite a challenge.

I’ve essentially been on the shelf for around five years, following a pretty serious knee injury alongside a longer-standing back problem. Running hasn’t exactly been a regular part of my life for a very long time, so getting back out there and putting one foot in front of the other for 31 consecutive days will be a challenge both physically and mentally.

But that’s partly why I wanted to do it.

My mam never let the size of the challenge define her. She faced something far bigger than 31 miles with an incredible strength and determination that continues to inspire me.

And I won’t be doing every mile alone.

For every single one of them, I’ll have the endless support of my ever-faithful labradoodle and best friend, Bean. I’m pretty sure he’ll consider the whole thing a fantastic opportunity for extra walks, rather than a gruelling fundraising challenge, but I’ll take all the encouragement I can get!

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help Macmillan continue to provide vital support to people living with cancer and their families.

Thank you so much for supporting me and helping me raise money for a cause that means so much to me and my family.
